Title:- Single blind study of efficacy of Guduchi kashaya (Decoction of Tinospora cardifolia) with special ref. to serum bilirubin levels.

Dr. Nilima Upadhye has submitted this dissertation to Pune University in the year 2007 for M.D. (Kaya Chikitsa/medicine).  Her guide was Dr. Sadanand Deshpande and research center was Tilak Ayurved Mahavidyalaya, Pune, and Nanal hospital (M.S.) India.

Trial of decoction Tinospora cardifolia was carried out on 40 patients of viral hepatitis to study action of Tinospora cardifolia on serum bilirubin levels.

A randomized single blind controlled clinical trial was carried out for minimum 21 days.

Patients having raised serum bilirubin were selected. Serum bilirubin levels more than 15 mg were excluded. Patients having Ayurvedic signs of bahupitta kamala (Hepatitis) were selected and patients of Ruddhapath kamala were excluded.

Dose of Tinospora cardifolia with honey was 60 ml in morning for 21 days.

Patients were divided in Group A (20 Patients) and Group B (20 patients). Group A was given 60 ml decoction of Tinospora cardifolia; Group B was given Erandapatra decoction

Serum Bilirubin of every patient was done.

Thesis was concluded in the following manner-

When Decoction of  Guduchi ( Tinospora cardifolia ) was given with honey was 60 ml in morning for 21 days ,it markedly reduced Sr.Bilirubin level & showed positive results in Viral Hepatitis

1)    Decoction of Tinospora cardifolia markedly reduces serum bilirubin levels in the patients of viral hepatitis.
2)    Tinospora cardifolia is more effective than Eranda in lowering serum bilirubin in hepatitis.
